About Gelert
At Gelert they know a thing or two about camping. Well you don't live in
Snowdonia, the UK's adventure capital, for 30 years without picking up a few
pointers.
This makes them just about the perfect people to talk to about tents and all
the camping gear you will need for the perfect family holiday.
With their tents you don't have to be a whiz at industrial engineering to get
them to stay up - because the team have done all the hard work for you.
All you need to think about is how to pack it all into the car making sure you
leave enough space for the kids!
So whether it's a forest or a field, the whole family are covered - which is
great news...should the heavens open during your nights under the stars.
The Legend of Gelert - Prince Llywelyn's Faithful Hound
Just south of the village of Beddgelert (Gelert's Grave), following the
footpath along the banks of the Glaslyn, you will find Gelert's Grave.
According to legend, the stone monument in the fields, marks the resting place
of "Gelert" the faithful hound of the medieval Welsh Prince Llywelyn the
Great.
The story, as written on the tombstone reads as follows:
"In the 13th century Llywelyn, prince of North Wales, had a palace at
Beddgelert. One day he went hunting without Gelert, "The Faithful Hound",
who was unaccountably absent. On Llywelyn's return the truant, stained and
smeared with blood, joyfully sprang to meet his master.
The prince alarmed hastened to find his son, and saw the infant's cot empty,
the bedclothes and floor covered with blood.
The frantic father plunged his sword into the hounds side, thinking it had
killed his heir. The dog's dying yell was answered by a child's cry.
Llywelyn searched and discovered his boy unharmed, but near by lay the body of
a mighty wolf which Gelert had slain.
The prince filled with remorse is said never to have smiled again. He buried
Gelert here."
