Trangia Stoves - Instructions for use

The Trangia Stoves are compact lightweight storm- proof alcohol-burning stoves that use Methylated Spirits (Meths) as a fuel.

Trangia Stove - Instructions for Use The burner is traditionally made of brass and when filling the Trangia burner with Meths, do not overfill it. It is an un-pressurised system that works well also in windy conditions.

When lighting the Trangia stove, remove the windshield and light with a match from the side. If you leave the windshield in place and light from above, you could get burnt. The burner lid acts as a 'simmer' in the open position. This should be used if the stove is cooking too quickly.

To put the Trangia stove out, remove the windshield (using a handle as it will be hot) and drop the simmer ring (in the closed position) onto the burner. Be careful if you have been using the simmer ring on the stove, as it may still be hot. Do not use the burner lid to put out the Trangia as this will destroy the seal inside.

If the Trangia stove goes out, always use the simmer ring as if you were putting it out and wait 60 seconds before refilling otherwise Meths could ignite due the heat of the stove.

  • Set up away from the tent and on level ground and in a sheltered location
  • All fuel must be stored in proper fuel bottles
  • Fill the burner to 3/4 full - Pour the fuel slowly so it doesn't spill, and wait for 1 minute to soak in.
  • Close the cap on the fuel bottle and move the bottle at least 5 metres away from the stove
  • Light the burner carefully using a match (stand up wind whilst doing this)
  • To test if the stove is lit (in bright sun), use a long blade of grass
  • Use the stove immediately - The cooker should burn for about 20 minutes
  • The simmer ring can be used to reduce the flame temperature when slower cooking is required
  • Extinguish the flame by closing the simmer ring and placing it on the burner (not by using the "screw on" lid)
  • Ensure the burner is cold before it is refilled. It must be cool enough to pick up
  • IF YOU CAN NOT PICK IT UP - DO NOT FILL IT UP
  • When moving the pans around, use the handles - hot pans burn!
  • Behave sensibly when around the stove
  • Make sure that hot pans are not put down on grass where it will be scorched
  • Store fuel away from the cooking area and the tents
  • If you spill Meths on your clothes - remove the item and wash immediately. Do not store it in your tent or near to a flame.
